Why Doesn’t My Anxiety or Depression Ever Get Better?

September 12, 2013 — Leave a comment

Someone wrote me recently and asked, “Why doesn’t my anxiety or depression ever get better?” That’s a million dollar question, isn’t it?

I’m going to answer that question today and I’m also going to tell you what you can do to overcome your anxiety or depression, so stay tuned!

So let’s get to your question: Why doesn’t my anxiety and depression ever get better?

What I’ve found in my psychotherapy practice is that there are generally 3 reasons why you’re not getting better.

Reason #1: You Haven’t Found a Healing Process that Really Works

You see, talk-therapy, by itself, won’t help you actually overcome your anxiety or depression. If you really want to get better, you have to be willing to go deeper.

I regularly meet people in my psychotherapy practice who have been going to counseling for many years, but nothing has really changed. Often that’s because what they’re doing in counseling is just talking about their problems.

There are a lot of wonderful types of therapy available today that help you understand your issues and make positive changes in your life. All of them are helpful in one way or another.

I’ve found, however, that if you want to actually decrease your symptoms of anxiety or depression, you have to go deeper and work with the emotional pain in your unconscious mind.

Reason #2: You Have an Addiction that’s Blocking Your Progress

Your addiction could be to drugs, alcohol, food, love, sex, gambling, work, shopping or even video games. It really doesn’t matter what you’re addicted to, because any addiction will ALWAYS numb out your real feelings.

Keep in mind that numbing your feelings is why you have the addiction. Addictions distract you from your emotional pain and make it easier to avoid dealing with your real issues.

Reason #3: You’re Not Getting in Touch with Your Deepest Feelings

If you’ve been working on issues that aren’t bringing about positive results in your life, you probably need to look a little deeper.  Maybe there are feelings you’ve stored deep inside yourself that need to be brought to the surface and aired out.

Healing anxiety or depression is like pealing an onion; when you take off one layer of issues, the next one has a way of showing up. A lot of times what we think is the problem is actually just covering what the real issue is.

Are There Issues You Don’t Want to Face?

Sometimes there are issues in our lives that we really don’t want to deal with. I know that when I first started working on my own issues, years ago, I was very happy to work on the hurt or anger that I had been feeling. It felt great to finally be able to release those feelings.

But one day a friend of mine suggested that maybe I needed to work on setting boundaries in my life. I hardly knew what boundaries were back then, and I was very uncomfortable with learning to set them.

Even though my friend kept reminding me, still it took quite a while before I was willing to face my own resistance. But surprisingly, when I finally worked through the deeper feelings that were blocking me, it was very freeing! For the first time in my life, I actually started to feel light and happy as a person.

The Hard Work Always Pays Off!

I’m so grateful today that I chose to face the issues that I needed to face back then. When you’re in the growth process, you never realize all of the amazing results that will come about in your life as a result of doing your inner work. The transformation you experience ripples out into every part of your life.

It was actually by working through my deeper issues that I developed my JoyIAm Process that has now helped so many other people transform their lives. The JoyIAm Process been an amazing blessing to me and to them.

Become the Person You Want to Be

Before we finish today, I want you to know that my JoyIAm Process can help you overcome the issues in your life, too, when you’re ready to do that.

It’s a simple, streamlined process that will help you get in touch with what you really need to deal with, and teach you how to become the person you’ve always wanted to be.

The good news is that when you deal with real issues, everything in your life will take a turn for the better! It’s so unbelievably wonderful to watch the changes that happen when people decide to actually transform their lives.

There’s a great quote by the great psychologist Carl Jung that says, “Your vision will become clear only when you look into your heart. Who looks outside, dreams. Who looks inside, awakens.”
